Emigrant Family Histories:
Hungarian Roots & New World Dreams book series
A community-born initiative
From a grassroots family history initiative, Hungarian Roots & American Dreams has grown into a participatory heritage program exploring Hungarian immigration across generations and continents.
At the heart of the program are four interconnected practices. Story and memory safeguarding was the founding impulse — ensuring that fragments of family lore, personal recollections, and lived experience are recorded and remembered. This was soon followed by the preservation of documents, photographs, letters, and artifacts, creating a shared and evolving archive.
Collaborative, peer-to-peer research transforms genealogical and historical inquiry into a shared journey rather than a solitary pursuit. Through the co-creation of written and spoken narratives, these materials come together as living family chronicles — stories that preserve the past while continuing to evolve across generations.
The book series
The books — curated and brought to life by rootStories — are the most tangible outcomes of the Hungarian Roots & American Dreams initiative. Each volume brings together family histories, archival materials, and research into lasting form.
By publishing these stories, the book series offers durability, visibility, and continuity. What emerges is not a closed historical account, but a shared record — one that preserves memory while remaining open to new discoveries and connections.
The volumes can be read as individual family stories, as thematic clusters (for instance stories of the ’56 refugees), or as a broader microhistorical narrative of Hungarian emigration. Together, they invite readers to move between personal experience and historical context.
Each volume stands on its own, yet together they form an expanding series. Clicking on a book invites you to explore more and to follow the stories further into their published form.
A place for support, knowledge, and friendship
What began as a small online group has grown into an active, international community where personal memory, research practice, and shared curiosity meet. Today, the Hungarian Roots & American Dreams community brings together people across generations and continents who are exploring Hungarian family history from multiple perspectives.
Beyond research, the community offers something equally important: connection. Through conversation, collaboration, and mutual support, preserving heritage becomes not a solitary task, but a shared journey.
